Another Sunday and after the mess ending of last week’s episode it is time to see where things stand in Game of Thrones. We open with Jon and Sam keeping a look out at the wall and the conversation that ensues is rather amusing. Sam wants to know what it was like to be with a woman and in the end he tells Jon that their vows don’t actually state they can’t have relations just they are not allowed to marry or father children. Meanwhile the wildings are having some interesting conversations around the fire about what they will do to the crows, a bit more of the same really. Sam ends up having a fit when he hears the woman he loves outside the gate, and it does indeed get open and they let her and the baby into the keep then he states the sweetest thing, “From now on wherever you go, I go too.”
It is shortly after this declaration that Mance does what he says he would and lights a massive fire that the North will never forget. The battle is set to begin and it does not look good for the crows let me tell you. The army they face is somewhat shades of Two Towers, a few hundred against thousands and the thousands have beasts and giants. The fight begins in earnest with many dying on both sides and one redheaded woman on a mission it seems to get to Jon Snow. She kills a friend of poor Sams right through the throat and Sam holds him as he dies then goes on the move, he is trying to keep out of the thick of battle it seems until he ends up in the thick and making plans.
A mammoth is going to take out the gate until they drop some explosives on it and literally set its rear end on fire and make it go away. Sam gets to Jon and lets him know the castle is going to fall so he leaves the wall to begin the fight anew. A rousing chorus of the vows they took happens below when a giant is rushing some of the men. Jon sends Sam to release one thing that the watch needs now and that is Ghost he gets right to work.
Jon gets into a major fight and nearly loses but he wins in the end then he finds himself staring down an arrow held by Ygritte. She however does not kill him and the pair smiles at one another before another of the watch put an arrow through her hair. Bless Jon holds her while she dies. In the end the watch holds them off for a night; Jon has great insight into it however saying it was merely a test of defenses.
The episode leaves us with Jon opening a gate and walking out into the day for a meeting with Mance.
